What did our client need?
Shell has increased process confidence and reduced risk within its experiments in gas and oil fuel cells, through the introduction of a new cleanroom facility from Connect 2 Cleanrooms (C2C).
During these classified experiments which aim to develop new energy technologies, pure oxygen is introduced to cell units. This is a high-risk process as oxygen could cause any contaminants, such as dust or grease, to ignite and burn hotter and faster than fire.
For such processes, oxygen cleaning is routinely conducted to ensure equipment is free of contaminants. The oxygen cleaning of these specialist parts was previously outsourced but inspections found that cleanliness levels weren’t acceptable for the experiments, so Shell upskilled and brought this process in-house to gain control over this high-risk and critical process.
How did we help our client?
As cleanroom specialists, C2C collaborated with Shell, developing a cleanroom design that suited its oxygen cleaning process-flow and met the critical parameters needed to achieve ISO 14644-1:2015 Class 8, such as air changes and particulate levels.
Shell wanted its cleanroom to go above and beyond the minimum requirements for oxygen cleaning, so a laminar flow unit is being used to create an ISO 14644-1:2015 Class 5 mini-environment within the cleanroom.

By bringing the oxygen cleaning in-house, Shell has gained more control over its process – simultaneously increasing the reliability of its experiments and reducing risk.
