Plastics Cleanrooms
Plastics manufacturing processes often involve higher particulate generation levels than other industries. However, specific plastic applications may benefit from cleanroom environments to ensure quality, cleanliness, and controlled production conditions.
Cleanrooms are commonly used in the manufacturing of medical devices made from plastics. These devices, such as surgical instruments, implants, catheters, and drug delivery systems, often require a sterile and controlled environment to prevent contamination and maintain product integrity.
Angstrom Technology has worked with many plastics manufacturers and developed process-specific solutions to challenges they face.
Modular cleanrooms for injection moulders
Localised modular cleanrooms can house an individual injection moulding machine. Softwall cleanrooms are a simple and effective way to upgrade a moulding machine to produce medical plastics. They can be mounted on castors to be wheeled away when access to the tool face is required. Softwall panels can also be profiled around the machine keeping the contamination-producing hopper external to the classified area.
HEPA-lite canopies
We designed a cleanroom system with automated clean-air HEPA-lite™ canopies, controllable by a user-friendly touch-screen interface. The cleanrooms house injection moulding machines, and plastics manufacturers can remotely activate actuators that slide sealed HEPA-lite™ canopies back to allow overhead crane access to tooling.
This customer-driven requirement ensures that clean air is supplied at the critical point of production and reduces contamination by significantly limiting the areas of machinery that are exposed to the external environment during tooling changes. This limits downtime for cleaning, reduces risk of contamination and increases productivity.
Cleanliness requirements for plastics moulders
It’s important to note that cleanroom requirements for plastics applications can vary significantly depending on the specific product, industry, and quality standards. Cleanrooms in plastics manufacturing typically focus on controlling particulate contamination rather than achieving the extreme levels of cleanliness required in semiconductor or pharmaceutical cleanrooms.
