Guest Blog: Fiona on Cleanrooms for e-Liquid Production
In this blog post, Fiona Kerr, our Territory Account Manager – Central, discusses the influence the Tobacco Products Directive 2014/14/EU (TPD) has on the design and build of cleanrooms.
The e-cigarette market has grown exponentially in recent years and all manufacturers must ensure their products are TPD compliant. The TPD aims to protect the health of EU citizens by regulating the manufacture, sale and marketing of all tobacco products, such as tobacco, cigarettes and electronic cigarettes.
The policies of the TPD cover the regulation of tobacco products on the EU market; this includes labelling, packaging and ingredients. It introduced new rules for nicotine-containing electronic cigarettes and refill containers (Article 20) from May 2016.
The MHRA is the competent authority for the notification scheme for e-cigarettes and refill containers in the UK and is responsible for implementing the majority of provisions under Article 20.
So why would an E-liquid manufacturer invest in a cleanroom?
Currently e-liquids with nicotine must be tested in a TPD compliant cleanroom or certified laboratory. The TPD’s new rules ensure a minimum standards for the safety and quality of all e-cigarettes and refill containers (otherwise known as e-liquids) and require all e-cigarettes and e-liquids be notified to MHRA before they can be sold.
Responsible manufacturers only ever want to supply their customers with the safest and highest quality e-liquids, therefore manufacturing them in a controlled environment aligns with this high standard. Like us, the manufacturers want their customers to have absolute trust in the products, so end-users can buy with complete confidence, knowing the manufacturing processes have taken place in an auditable, quality-controlled environment.
In designing your cleanroom we take into consideration your process, environment, machinery, operators and any future developments which may be coming up – all importantly future-proofing your controlled environment as your business grows.
We’d love to talk to you about where we can support your specific cleanroom requirements. Contact us, to start discussing your project today!
